Course content
Introduction to the process of translating The principle and phases of translation Identification Interpretation Stylization Methods of translation Literary translation, film translation Translation practice, text interpretation

Learning outcomes
The seminar is centred at the essential question of literary translation and problems in literary practice of translating into Czech. The seminar will introduce basic terms of literary translation theory and will concentrate on cultural differences between the Czech and Anglo-American provenience, emphasizing the translation of literary allusions, phrases, place names and the problem of addressing a literary character.
Competence in reading and literature, fluency in written English and Czech.
Prerequisites
C1 according to The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Interest in literature, literary translation and Czech language

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance assessment, Analysis of creative work (musical, visual, literary)

All examinations and consultations are held in English. The student is to hand in a literary translation extract (3-5 pages)
