Course content
The programme covers the following themes: the American Renaissance (Irving, Cooper), the American transcendentalism (Emerson, Thoreau), Romantic poetry (Poe, Longfellow), the links between Romanticism and Realism (Hawthorne, Melville), regional fiction (B. Harte, H. Beecher Stowe), satire (Samuel Clemens), adventure (Jack London), naturalism (Crane, Norris, Dreiser), the development of the psychological novel (James, Wharton, Chopin), the development of poetry (Whitman, Dickinson and the poets at the turn of the century).

Learning outcomes
The course is intended to introduce distinguished 19th-century American authors and their work with respect to the development of American culture in the 17th and the 18th centuries (the role of the 'American dream,' the influence of Puritanism, the War of Independence). Lectures and seminars aim to make students familiar with particular literary texts as well as with the links between the development of American literature and a relevant cultural and historical experience.

Prerequisites
Minimum level of English: Upper-Intermediate. Knowledge of essential concepts of literature.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Essay, Analysis of creative work (musical, visual, literary), Interview

All examinations and consultations are held in English. Active participation in the seminar, a written interpretation of a chosen work, a proficiency test.
