Learning outcomes
This course provides an introduction to the life and institutions of Australia. It covers all the periods of Australia's history: the time of the Indigenous people, British settlement, colonial independence, Federation and the two Worlds Wars, and modern prosperity. The art and literature of these periods will be surveyed, with particular emphasis on primary sources of acknowledged significance. There are no specific academic requirements, except for knowledge of the English language to at least Upper Intermediate level, and a demonstrated interest in the topic.
Basic knowledge of Australian history, culture and institutions and understanding of specific features of the Australian continent.

Assessment methods and criteria
Essay

All examinations and consultations are held in English. Attendance at classes; reading of one Australian Novel and submitting a report on it; watching a listed Australian film and writing a report on it; an essay on the history, culture and institutions of Australia, specifically on one of the topic areas listed.
