Learning outcomes
This course deals with the development of the English language from the earliest stages of Indo-European and Proto-Germanic, via the Old, Middle, and New English periods to Modern English. It focuses on changes on the phonological, grammatical, and lexical levels and discusses their mutual relationships. The main aims of the course are to familiarise its participants with the development of English from a synthetic to an analytic language, to make them understand the sources of its lexical diversity, and to comprehend social, cultural, and historical aspects of this development.
Basic knowledge of development tendecies in the English language.
