Course content
1. An overview of the most important historical influences on the current state of English pronunciation 2. Phonetic transcription 3. English vowels 4. English consonants 5. Schwa a anglické /r/ 6. Mute sounds 7. Syllable 8. Stress 9. Connected Speech 10. Intonation 11. Typical mistakes made by Czech speakers

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the complexity of English pronunciation and especially the problematic correspondence of pronunciation and spelling. The students will first become familiar with the sound system of English, its differences from the Czech system, and problems arising from these key differences. Special attention will be paid to segmental elements (phonemes) and selected suprasegmental phenomena, such as stress, tempo, intonation, rhythm, intonation, etc. The seminars will be dedicated to pronunciation training (reception, reproduction, and own production) and remedial exercises aimed at any potential incorrect habits.

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam

Consultations and examinations are held in English. Attendance (minimum 70%) and active participation in seminars. Final test with a result of at least 70%. Oral examination.
