Course content
Lectures: 1. Introduction to the study of biogeography. Climatic conditions of the spread of organisms in the world and in the Czech Republic. 2. Hydrological conditions of the spread of organisms in the world and in the Czech Republic. 3. Geological and geomorphological conditions of the distribution of organisms in the world and in the Czech Republic. 4. Geomorphological conditions of the spread of organisms in the world and in the Czech Republic. Pedological conditions of the spread of organisms in the world and in the Czech Republic. 5. Biomes of the world. 6. Campuses. Spatial spread of organisms. 7. Spatial diversification of biota. 8. Spatial contexts of speciation - species, taxonomy, evolution 9. Phylogeny. Extinction. 10. Phylogenetic biogeography. 11. Ecological biogeography. 12. Island biogeography. 13. Historical biogeography - development of distribution of organisms and their communities. 14. Regional biogeography of the Czech Republic. Exercises: 1. Entering discussion topics. 2. Consultations on the assignment of individual works and discussion topics. 3. Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the spatial issues of the distribution of organisms on Earth. The course is divided into several study modules: (1) spatial foundations of biogeography, (2) general biogeography, (3) other approaches in biogeography, (4) regional phytogeography and zoogeography, and (5) biogeographical literature. The first three modules are the subject of lectures, the fourth self-study based on multimedia materials and the last subject of exercises. In the module spatial basics of biogeography, attention is paid to the systematization of physical geography, in the module of general biogeography the study focuses on the issue of evolutionary factors influencing the distribution of organisms, in the module of other approaches in biogeography attention is paid to island, historical and ecological biogeography, in the module of regional biogeography distribution of taxa and in the last module attention is paid to a critical analysis of selected biogeographical topics based on the study of scientific literature.
Students are able to clarify the complexity of spatial differentiation of the distribution of living organisms on Earth. Based on the location of the place on Earth, they are able to assess the occurrence of specific taxa in this area. They are able to work independently in the field of biogeography and know the principles of scientific publication in biogeography.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of high school physical geography and ecology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Test

Credit requirements: - Participation in a full-day field exercise. - Attendance at the campus exercise (2 unexcused absences are allowed). - Active participation in exercises on campus = preparation and presentation of one topic, comments on all other topics. - Obtaining at least 60% of points from the credit test. The credit requires the correct localization of at least 12 geographical terms out of 20 on a blind map of the world with marked coastlines, major watercourses and lakes. Terms for localization can be found in the relevant section here: http://worldofplants.net/geography/phytogeography-and-zoogeography/ Exam requirements: The subject of the exam is knowledge of the course issues on the basis of lectures and compulsory study literature in the given scope. The exam is written. A minimum of 60% success rate is required to pass the exam. In the first part of the written exam there are always 10 test questions on regional biogeography (usually 5 times from phytogeography and 5 times from zoogeography), the choice is from four options and just one answer is correct. In the second part of the exam there are 2 maps, the task is to draw a biogeographical phenomenon or to determine which phenomenon is drawn. The third part of the written part contains 8 tasks from general biogeography. A point is awarded for each correct answer in any part of the test. So in total it is 20 points. You must obtain 12 points to pass the written part of the exam.
