Course content
Origin and development of nature conservation law - Basic causes, aims, subjects and content as well as position in the framework of environmental law - Legal legislation of the international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora - Legal legislation of the habitats, ecosystems and landscape protection - Hard law and soft law nature conservation conventions - Nature conservation agreements at global, regional and local levels - Action plans and strategies in nature conservation and biodiversity management - International environmental governmental organizations and NGO´s - Implementation of the obligations from international nature conservation law - Nature conservation law in European Communities, basic principles, primar and secondary EC law in the field of nature and landscape, fauna and flora - Natura 2000 Network in the EC and Czech Republic - Territorial and species protection in the Czech legislation - Legal regulation of the zoological gardens and animal rescue centers - Environmental impact assesment in Specially Protected Bird Areas and European Specially Protected Habitats - Practice of decisions of the European Court of Justice in nature conservation.

Learning outcomes
This course gives an overview of the nature conservation and biodiversity management law, legal tools at the international, EC and Czech levels, including both theoretical and practical aspects.
Ability to evaluate the causes, goals, subject of legal protection, position in the system of environmental law. Focus on: legal protection of fauna and flora in the context of trade in endangered species according to CITES, as well as protection of habitats, ecosystems and landscapes. Orientation in nature protection legislation in the EU and the Czech Republic.
Prerequisites
At least 80% participation in classes, active participation in discussions.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Combined exam

Knowledge of legal regulations of nature protection in the Czech Republic and the EU. Principles of trade in endangered species according to CITES, legislation on the protection of habitats, ecosystems and landscapes. Nature conservation conventions, global, regional, bilateral agreements, action programs and nature conservation strategies. Natura 2000 system in the EU and in the Czech Republic - Species and territorial protection in Czech legislation. Legal regime of operation of zoos and rescue stations. Assessment of the effects of projects and concepts on bird areas and sites of European importance. The case law of the European Court of Justice in the field of nature protection.
