Course content
Content of lectures: 1) Introduction into Landscape ecology, approach, history, development. Interdisciplinar, holistic approach, main solved tasks, European Landscape Convention 2) Landscape, scale level, hierarchy of processes. Definition of landscape, landscape homogeneity and heterogeneity in dependence on scale level. Spatial distribution of features and processes. 3) Data for landscape ecology, GIS, Remote sensing. Data with defined or non defined spatial localization (descriptions, maps, digital data), historical - recent data. Data accessibility. 4) Landscape ecology methods. Spatial data processing. Time and spatial data processing, trends, models, spatial interpolations. Historical simulations, prediction models. 5) Factors modeling landscape, environmental and anthropogenic influences. Landscape as a integral result of co-influencing factors. Environmental factors (geology, geomorphology, pedology, climate, hydrology, geographic localization). Anthropogenic factors (culture, history, economics, ethics) 6) Landscape, structure, function and change. Landscape pattern. Landscape as a dynamic system. Time changes in landscape (disturbance, fragmentation, succession) 7) Landscape management, legislation 8) Landscape processes - atmosphere (climate change, climate fluctuation, examples form world and history, "global weirding") 9) Landscape processes - hydrosphere (hydrological cycle, drought, flooding risk, evapotranspiration - dissipation of solar energy, water as a key resource in this century, water distribution in landscape - global level, water management) 10) Landscape processes - soil (soil as a strategic resource, soil protection, soil risks - erosion, mineralization, desertification) 11) Landscape processes - vegetation (influence of vegetation on local - regional - global climate, consequences for landscape energy balance, carbon sequestration) 12) Landscape ecosystem functioning. Effort for stable use of landscape, economical evaluation of landscape functions, Hessen method Content of practicals: Type of spatial data in landscape ecology (i), basic parameters, accessibility, visualizations. Main operations with spatial data, classifications, time changes detection, trends Process hierarchy in landscape ecology - scaling, spatial relations. Relief - Digital Elevation Models (DEM) their properties and derived parameters. Landscape energetic, influence of land use and vegetation on solar energy dissipation, thermal data. Climatic database, climate change and history, global accessible databases. Hydrological data: runoff models and water retention in landscape Pedological data, accessible databases, derived parameters - erosion risk. Vegetation as an integral value of environmental conditions - models. Data synthesis, complex landscape model, spatial analyses

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to bring general information about Landscape ecology and its main principles and methods. Main content of Landscape ecology I. is focused on natural processes in landscape, their interconnections and especially their resulting synthesis, which is related to holistic approach of landscape research. The course uses ecology and ecosystem biology knowledge. There is also effort to connect basic and applied research.
The student should be able to understand main landscape processes and their causality and interconnections
Prerequisites
The assumption is the basic knowledge (secondary school level) of natural science disciplines (biology, geography). The advantage but not necessary is the knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS)

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Presence on practices, - maximal absence is 2 hours during two days, participation on 2 from three one-day excursions
