Course content
Basic properties of water environment. Methods of studies, Water and nutrient ercycling.Chemical and physical conditions for life in water, space and time changes.Producers, primary production of lakes and oceans. Plankton animals: life in dense environment. Benthic animals. Microbial loop in food nets: role of microorganisms. Invertebrate predators, fishes: their role in forming the structure of community. Life in running waters. Large rivers. Ground waters. Ecosystems of the sea littoral and of shelf sea. Ecosystem of the deep sea, production and food chains. Water pollution: chemical, thermal, radioactive, dispersed. Eutrophication. Water as a resource: utilisation of surface and ground waters. Fishery. Human impact on water ecosystems. Presentations:

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing)
  • Preparation for exam - 30 hours per semester
  • Preparation for classes - 20 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
Basic treatise on life of freshwater and partly also marine communities with respect to their production and food chains and their functioning including nutrient recycling and relation to terrestrial ecosystems.
Students will get basic knowledge and understanding in ecology of aquatic ecosystems and life specifics in water.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge at a high school level.

Written examination

To meet basic course requirements for successful exam (minimum 50%).
