Course content
Definition, the subject and methods of comparative study World literature: particular competences Synchronic and diachronic comparing: interpretation and examples (an overview of comparative methods) The relationship of comparative study to affiliated social sciences: the theory of discourse Types of thematic and formal relationships between texts: intertextuality and contextuality Comparative study and genology (typology of literary genres) Literature in cultural contexts (imagology and hermeneutics) Literature and other arts (the relationship between comparative literature and music or fine arts) The problems of period division and comparative terminology A historical overview of world and Czech-Slovak comparative study

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book), Individual preparation for exam, Work with multi-media resources (texts, internet, IT technologies)
Learning outcomes
This course covers the basic terminology; modern world concepts of comparatives studies; the development of comparative method; particular components and forms of world literature as theoretical categories; and the contribution of the Czech and Slovak thinking to literary comparative studies.
The ability to employ the comparative method as a classifying and interpretative approach in the interpretation of texts and their mutual relations; a good grasp of the comparative terminology, using the terms in the study of literary history and literary theory.
Prerequisites
Prerequisite: completion of the Introduction to the study of literature exam.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance assessment, Systematic student observation, Seminar work, Interim evaluation

A seminar paper; active participation in the course; completion of the final test; completion of a written presentation no shorter than 10 standard pages (an interpretation of an extract or a specialised work.
