Course content
Defining the genre; definitions; the attributes of contemporary science fiction. The early works and milestones in the development of sci-fi. Science fiction changing with time and society. British science fiction. The development of the genre in the U.S.A. Czech science fiction. A new generation of Czech sci-fi authors. Science fiction in the former socialist countries. World science fiction, focusing particularly on Anglo-Saxon world. The possibilities of employing science fiction in teaching. Films based on sci-fi themes; comparing films with original literary works.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book)
Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the history of science fiction; its literary theoretical definition and characteristics; the typologic differenciation within this genre; and analyses of its key texts ("sci-fi classics").
A sound grasp of the history, development and evaluation of science fiction and an ability to employ creatively the genre, its authors and their works or particular features in teaching.
Prerequisites
The basic knowledge of sci-fi authors and their works.

Assessment methods and criteria
Essay, Analysis of student's language skills

A seminar presentation and final essay related to the subject matter and recommended literature.
