Course content
1. An introduction to the subject, the theory of literary communication and reception as a field of research. 2. The principle and rules of literary communication and reception. A literary text and the reader. 3. The developmental stages and peculiarities of children's readership. 4. Various levels of children's reception of a literary text. The reader's cultivation. 5. The reading needs, motivations, interests and preferences of today's children. 6. The determinative aspects of children's readership. The contemporary reader's profile. 7. Literary genres in the reception and concretisation of children's readership. 8. Literary humour in the reception of the child reader. 9. The modern child reader and mass media culture. 10. Triviality and kitsch in contemporary children's literature and reading. 11. Children's readership and literary education at school. 12. The school reader at senior level of basic school as a (de)motivating factor in pupils' reading. 13. Current trends, changes, and peculiarities of teenage readership. 14. Evaluating students papers. Credited acknowledgement of the results.

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on literary communication and receptive aesthetics as a concept and subject of research. It deals with the changes that the Czech society, book culture and the child reader underwent after 1989. Children's readership as methodological issue.
A good grasp of the basics of the field. A general understanding of the current issues of children's readership in both junior and senior age groups. The ability to employ this knowledge, verified by the student's own survey, in literary education of the cultivated reader at senior level of basic school.

Assessment methods and criteria
Analysis of creative work (musical, visual, literary), Interview

Completion of a seminar paper. A questionnaire survey on pupils in selected forms at senior level of basic school.
