Course content
1. Origin and evolution of Cyanobacteria, geological role, Geat Oxygenatinon Event, diversity and significance of planktonic Cyanobacteria, cyanobacterial toxins and their ecological role. 2. Diversity of non-planktonic cyanobacteria, extreme biotopes, importance of Cyanobacteria for humans. 3. Introduction to Eukaryotic algae, types of thallus, symbiotic theory. Phylogeny, diversity and ecological role of Chlorarachniophyta, Cryptophyta and Euglenophyta. 4. Phylogeny, diversity and ecological role of Haptophyta and Dinophyta. 5. Fotosyntetizing Stramenopila I. - introduction, general features, evolution of the group; phylogeny, diversity and ecological role of Bacillariophyceae, Dictyochophyceae. 6. Fotosyntetizing Stramenopila II.- Eustigmatophyceae, Chrysophyceae and small groups, Xanthophyceae, Phaeophyceae. 7. Archeaplastida I, introduction and evolution; phylogeny, diversity and ecological role of Glaukophyta and Rhodophyta. 8. Archaeplastida II, phylogeny, diversity and ecological role of Ulvophyceae and Trebouxiophyceae. 9. Archaeplastida III., Chlorophyceae. 10. Archeplastida IV, algae of the Streptophyte line. 11. Algae ecology and overall summary. 12. Excursion The exercises complement the theoretical knowledge of lectures by determination of the most important Cyanobacteria and algae of each groups.

Learning outcomes
Basic lecture for all biological disciplines, introduction of the evolution of Cyanobacteria and algae, their biology, diversity, ecology and function in ecosystems.
Students will acquire basic knowledge of phycology.
Prerequisites
Basic work with a microscope.

Written examination

credit: identification of algae and cyanobacteria from excersizes exam: test, at least on 55%
