Content of lectures: 1) Annual cycles on the globe, heath ballance, air cyrculation, wind systems; climatic zones, climadiagrams; distribution of the main bioms. 2) Relations between biotic characteristics and latitude, phytogeographical and zoogeographicalprovinces; history of continents. 3) Tropical rain forest. 4) Deciduous tropical forests and savanas. 5) Arid ecosystems. 6) Sclerophyllous vegetation. 7) Evergreen and deciduous forests of the temperate zone. 8) Boreal coniferous forests. 9) Subarctic zone and tundra. 10) Ecosystems of high altitude. 11) Wetlands I (permanent and periodic lakes, alluvia, sea shore, oceans). 12) Wetlands II (peatbogs). 13) Islands Content of practices: Students present their own power-point prezentation concerning a particular topic related to biomes or biogeography.
|
Learning activities and teaching methods |
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Individual preparation for exam
|
Learning outcomes |
The course provides an overview over the world biomes, both zonal and azonal. All lectures are illustrated by numerous illustrative slides. In the seminar part, usually students themselves present their experiences from various biomes or refer about speciphic biogeographic problems.
Students get knowledge on distribution, history, ecology and human impact on the main ecosystems over the globe. |
Prerequisites |
Basic knowledge in botany, zoology, and ecology.
|
Assessment methods and criteria |
Combined exam
Students must present a talk concerning a selected particular problem of ecology of world biomes, they must exhibit an ability to work with international literature and synthetize relevant information. |
