Course content
Lectures: 1. Subject-matter of analytical chemistry, sample extraction, sample analysis 2. Qualitative analytical chemistry, sensitivity of analytical reactions, classification of inorganic ions in classes, tests for the selected ions 3. Protolytic equilibrium, pH, the theory of acids and alkalis 4. Quantitative analysis, fundamentals of titrimetric analysis 5. Acidimetry, alkalimetry 6. Measuring methods based on redox processes, precipitation titration, complexometry 7. Ion exchangers, their types and application in analytical chemistry 8. Differences between classical and instrumental analysis, introduction to potentiometry 9. Potentiometry, measurement of pH, ion-selective electrodes 10. Application of electrolytic processes in analytical chemistry, polarography, modern polarographic techniques 11. Spectral and optical methods, nuclear and molecular absorption spectrophotometry 12. Infrared spectrometry and mass spectrometry, emission optical analytical methods 13. Refractometry, polarimetry 14. Chemical separatory methods, liquid and gas chromatography, electromigration methods, electrophoresis, isotachophoresis Laboratory exercises: 1. Principles of occupation safety, common operations in a chemical laboratory, toxicology, calculations 2. Qualitative analysis - tests for cations using the method based on hydrogen monosulphide 3. Quantitative analysis of iron using the ammonia-based method 4. Acidimetry - preparation of volumetric solution of HCl and determination of titre using KHCO3, determination of total alkalinity of technical hydrate oxide 5. Complexometric determination of calcium, magnesium and water hardness 6. Argentometric determination of iodides by Volhard 7. Bromatemetric and iodometric determination of L-ascorbic acid 8. Manganometry - preparation of volumetric solution of KMnO4 and determination of titre using Mohr's salt, determination of FeSO4 in Ferronat retard medicament 9. Potentiometry - determination of chlorides in mineral water, pH measurement 10. Spectrophotometry - preparation of calibration solutions, construction of calibration curve, determination of Fe3+ using rhodanide

Learning outcomes
The lectures cover the introduction to analytical chemistry and fundamentals of quantitative and qualitative analytical chemistry. During the laboratory exercises the student should acquire basic laboratory-analytical skills.
Students will be able to understand the principles of analytical techniques, they will be also able to assess the possibilities and usefullness of respective methods. They will learn the communication with specialists in analytical chemistry.

Assessment methods and criteria

Passing laboratory exercises, elaboration of reports on laboratory exercises, knowledge of information volume intended for the exam.
