Course content
Lectures (chemistry): 1st week Structure of substances, periodical system of elements. 2nd week Chemical bond and characteristics of substances. 3rd week Chemical process, energy and kinetics of chemical reactions. 4th week Chemical equilibrium, reactions in electrolyte solutions, pH. 5th week Important biogenic elements, hydrogen and oxygen. 6th week Carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, compounds and circulation of elements in the nature. 7th week Trace elements and their environmental importance. 8th week Atmosphere and hydrosphere, composition and pollution of the environment. 9th week Composition and characteristics of organic compounds, isomerism. 10th week Outline of organic compounds and their relationship to particular groups of natural substances. 11th week Lipids, characteristics and biological importance. 12th week Saccharides, characteristics and biological importance. 13th week Amino acids, peptides, proteins, characteristics and function in living organisms. 14th week Synthetic macromolecular substances, degradation of plastic materials. Lectures (nuclear physics): 1st week Introduction. 2nd-3rd weeks Interactions of ionizing radiation with matter. 4th week Structure of atomic shell and molecules. 5th - 6th weeks Atomic nucleus and radioactivity. 7th - 8th weeks Ionizing radiation sources. 9th - 10th weeks Nuclear reactions (including fission reactions, nuclear synthesis). 11th - 12th weeks Ionizing radiation detection principles. 13th - 14th weeks Application of radionuclides and ionizing radiation.

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming)
  • Class attendance - 42 hours per semester

Learning outcomes
The target of the subject is to unify knowledge of chemistry from the secondary school to a level, which can make possible to understand the principle of important natural processes and need of the environmental protection and also to explain the structure of molecules, atoms, nuclei and particles, interactions of ionizing radiation with matter, radioactivity and nuclear reactions.
After completing the subject of "Selected chapters of chemistry and nuclear physics", the student will master knowledge in the field of the structure of substances, chemical bonds and characteristics of substances and furthermore also about the composition and properties of organic substances, lipids and saccharides. In the field of nuclear physics, the student will particularly know interactions of ionizing radiation with matter, particular ionizing radiation sources and principles of the ionizing radiation detection.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of chemistry.

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam, Test

Participation in tutorials. To manage to gain knowledge from selected chapters of chemistry, which can be used in further studies.
