Course content
1. Course content and aims. Theoretical basics: covalent bond, structure, main types of isomerism, system of organic compounds, principles of terminology. 2. Theoretical basics: consequences of polarity on physical and chemical properties, characteristics of organic reactions. 3. Hydrocarbons. 4. Halogen derivatives of hydrocarbons. Sulphur or nitrogen containing biologically active compounds. 5. Hydroxycompounds. 6. Carbonyl compounds. 7. Carboxylic acids and their functional derivatives. 8. Substitution derivatives of carboxylic acids. Derivatives of carbonic acid. 9. Heterocyclic compounds. 10. Amino acids, peptides, proteins. 11. Lipids. 12. Carbohydrates. 13. Glycosides, plant phenolics, alkaloids. 14. Isoprenoids, steroids, natural pigments, selected biologically active natural products.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Laboratory

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to extend and amplify knowledge of organic chemistry from secondary schools aimed at natural products. The course forms a ground for biochemistry and follow-up courses. The lectures consist of three thematic segments: theoretical basics (ca 15 % of the extent), systematic part (ca 40 %) and natural products (ca 45 %). Within the individual systematic groups, an accent is put on effects of a functional group on physical and chemical properties of organic compounds and on biological effects.
Students gain knowledge enabling them to understand and anticipate physical properties, reactivity and main biological effects of both synthetic and natural organic compounds of their professional interest. At the same time, they gain basics necessary for learning of biochemistry and follow-up courses.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry confirmed by successful examination in the preceding semester. Knowledge of organic chemistry at standard level of secondary schools.

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam, Test, Development of laboratory protocols

Comprehension of the effect of main functional organic groups on substantial physical and chemical properties and biological effects of organic compounds. Application of the gained knowledge on natural products. Laboratory testing of selected natural product properties.
