Course content
1. Definition of a family. Functions of family. History of family. Historical overview. 2. The theory of family. Modern family in Western society. 3. Czech family in the sociodemographic data. Specifics of Czech family. 4. The structure of family, assessing of family functioning, family disturbances in relation to children, parenthood disorders. 5. Child in particularly difficult life situations, assessing of the needs of endangered children. 6. Communication with a child client and their parents, the family as a client, a professional visit in a family. 7. Types of therapeutic and counseling work with a family. 8. Videotraining in interactions 9. Children's Rights Convention. 10. Children living outside their own families, foster care. 11. Divorce and joint custody after divorce. 12. The specific situations in a family - Clinical families (family with neglected, abused child/adult). 13. Family and disease. Family with a disabled child/adult. 14. Family of a juvenile delinquent. Family of a single mother. Family with a drug addict. Romany family. Family of refugees.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book), Demonstration

Learning outcomes
The course covers the theoretical and practical bases of social work with families, professional social work with vulnerable children and family in specific situations, including the training in practical skills. Students analyze their own experience from professional practice during the semester.
Students will gain theoretical knowledge in the field of social work with families and will be able to understand the context and identify crisis situations occurring in a family. They will acquire skills how to help clients and prevent crisis situations. Students will discuss their own experience from professional practice during the seminar.
Prerequisites
Before entering the subject students should be able to define the field of social work, its objectives, basic concepts of social work as social functioning, interaction, social intervention, etc., The prerequisite the subject Theory and Methods of Social Work with Individuals.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Seminar work

Compulsory attendance in seminars, 1 absence tolerated. Lectures are optional. Seminar essay required. The seminar essay must be devoted to a specific social problem, target group, analyzing possible intervention procedures etc. in the context of social work with families. One foreign language source required. Students choose the essay topic by themselves after consultation with the teacher. Essay extent: 1000 - 2000 words (less / more only in justified cases) Instructions: fluent text with logical links (!). The essay must have a principal professional idea. 1. Introduction - introduction to the issue, justification of the selected topic. 2. Theoretical part - the main part. 3. Conclusion - a summary of the most important findings and benefits (very briefly). 4. References - contains all the used professional (!) sources (at least 2 sources, one of them in a foreigner language - see above). They both may be electronic. The formal aspect of the essay: see Methodological tool for theses elaboration (see www.tf.jcu.cz). Submission deadline and the form (in a printed or electronic form) will be announced at the beginning of the semester. The second requirement - oral examination in the studied topics and recommended literature. The terms of oral examination will be duly listed in the Stag system according to the Study and Examination Regulations of the Faculty of Theology.
