Course content |
(1) Growth and development of plants. Ontogenetic cycles of early plants (algae, bryophytes, ferns) and seed plants. Evolution of the regulatory mechanisms of growth and development of plants, organogenesis. (2) Regulation of the growth and development - phytohormones and other regulatory substances of plants and transport of signals in cells. (3) Ontogenesis -vegetative phase of growth. Germination, dormancy of seeds and buds, sprouting. Photomorfogenesis - regulation of growth and development by light. Photoreceptors for red and blue light, light reactions in plants. Perception and transfer of photoperiodic signals on the cell level, endogenous rhythms of physiological processes. (4) Juvenility and transfer to the generative phase of development, vernalisation. Photoperiodism and induction of flowering. Regulation of flower's organs development. Male and female gametogenesis, fertilization, embryogenesis and fruit development. Somatic embryogenesis. Vegetative reproduction organs, tuberization. Senescence. (5) Cell wall , features and functions in plant cell. (6) Photosynthesis- light reactions, structure of photosynthetic apparatus, plant pigments. The plant bioenergetics. (7) Photosynthesis and respiration. CO2 fixation - types of carboxylation cycles. (8) Photosynthesis and respiration of leaves, whole plants and canopy. Ecophysiology of photosynthesis. (9) State and movement of water in plant. Exchange of heat, water vapour and gasses between plant and environment. (10) Exchange of dissolved compounds with environment and transport in plant body, transport of assimilates by phloem. (11) Mineral and organic nutrition of plants. Intake and assimilation of mineral nutrients (elements). (12) Factors of the environment, stressors, reactions of plants to the abiotic and biotic stress. (13) Secondary metabolites of plants, the role in plant defence and human life.

Learning outcomes |
It is the aim to explain the features and significance of the most important physiological processes taking part in plants life. Physical, biochemical and molecular biological laws of the mass and energy exchange between plant and environment will be highlighted as well as the metabolite and water transport inside the plant body. Quantitative approach will be stressed which should enable the students to approximate the response of plant to various environmental conditions. Students should be able to understand the relations between structure and function at the organ, tissue, cell, sub-cellular and molecular level.
Basic knowledge on physiological processes in plants, on quantitative plant-environment relations, coordination and stoichiometry of essential events in plant's life. Overview and applicability of basic plant physiology methods. |

Secondary school knowledge in biochemistry and physics is expected.

Assessment methods and criteria |
Oral examination, Written examination, Development of laboratory protocols
Fulfil the requirement of >50 % points from three tests during the semester or succeed in the final oral exam. Credit from practical training: 1) Presence in the practical training programme, 2) passing the final test, 3) oral presentation of a mini-project solved during the practical training. |
