Course content
The course provides knowledge of innovative approaches to rural space and the possibilities of its development. The course consists of: 1. Theoretical approaches to the defining rural areas, typology of the problems, defining the potential of rural areas. 2. Definition and typology of innovative approaches in terms of solving problems in the country. 3. Europe-wide problems of rural development, depopulation of rural areas, lack of jobs, departure of young people from rural areas to the cities and other socio-economic phenomena. 4. The development potential of rural areas, in the CR, abroad. 5. Actors of rural areas development, stakeholders of innovative approaches to rural development, experience of the EU 15 and new member countries (including the CR). 6. Areas of innovative approaches, education, transport, renewable energy, agriculture, employment, planning, land use, infrastructure, conservation, housing, business and industry, services, tourism, public administration, leisure activities, business, etc. The development, modernization and diversification of activities in rural areas. 7. Innovative approaches to human resources, workforce qualification, the number of employed people in this industry, average income, and other attributes. Population mobility, especially migration related to the expected changes in the rural area. 8. National and regional characteristics and disparities in terms of different levels and hierarchy of innovative tools or importance of innovative approaches used. Technical and utility value of new technologies, products and services in relation to the countryside (including the examples used in practice). 9. Financing of innovative approaches (own, foreign, PPP). 10. Projects based on experience with the Leader method in innovative approaches stimulating the development. Projects designed and implemented by local partner communities, focusing on specific issues. 11. The current development problems, the potential of rural areas and innovative approaches in the CR and the EU (or abroad). Development of rural areas and barriers with regard to experience in the CR and abroad. 12. Summary of findings and approaches, applying innovative approaches to rural development. Individual topics will be demonstrated on case studies on current trends in development policy of rural areas in the CR and abroad and on the practical examples of innovative approaches and their impact on the competitiveness and growth of regions

Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student is able to identify developing problems and potential of rural areas within the application of innovative approaches. The course introduces students to the overall problems of rural areas from the perspective of possible alternatives of development and hidden potential. Attention is paid to human potential, economic diversification and rural disparities in EU and OECD individual countries. It also focuses on the development actors and stakeholders in innovative approaches to rural development. The main objective is to provide students with an overview of the overall impact of this policy on the competitiveness of regions within the application of innovative approaches.
After completing the course the student is able to identify developing problems and potential of rural areas within the application of innovative approaches.

Combined exam, Seminar work

Credit Requirements: Seminar paper on a given topic. Examination Requirements: Examination is determined by the elaboration of the project on a given topic. Examination (oral and written).
