Course content
1. Polymers, basic concepts, origin and preparation of macromolecular substances, polyreaction 2. Structure and morphology and its influence on plastic properties, amorphous and semicrystalline plastics 3. Transition temperatures of plastics and their technical significance, glass transition temperature, viscous flow temperature, melting point 4. Deformation (viscoelastic) behavior of plastics, Tucket's model, crepe, long-term properties of plastics 5. Physical, chemical, mechanical and technological properties of individual plastics, composition, surface wettability, chemical resistance 6. Evaluation of mechanical properties of polymers (stiffness and strength), modifiers of plastic properties 7. Aging and degradation - resistance of plastics, ecological aspects and recycling of plastics 8. Biopolymers, biodegradable polymers and biocomposites 9. Composite materials - properties, distribution, use 10. Wood - basic knowledge and properties, primary wood production 11. Wood - microscopic, macroscopic structure of wood, chemical composition of wood 12. Basic types of wood, their application in the processing industry, properties of wood, defects and pests of wood 13. Technical glass and ceramics - properties, special refractory and heat insulating materials, metal glasses 14. Other non-metallic technical materials - paper, leather, building materials

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will gain an overview of the division, properties and technologies related to technically important non-metallic materials, with emphasis on plastics, modern composite materials and wood. Traditional materials (glass, paper, leather or building materials) as well as modern trends in the field of materials engineering (biomaterials, nanocomposites, etc.) are not left out. Furthermore, the student will gain knowledge about the methods of determining the basic material properties and the theoretical foundations of manual and machine processing of these materials in relation to production practice.
The student has an overview of the properties, production and use of non-metallic technical materials, especially plastics, composite materials, wood and glass.
