Course content
1. Introduction. Building materials structure, elementary properties, durability and resistance 2. Elementary properties of building materials - methods of verifying of their properties 3. Stone and stone materials - mining areas and producing stone materials 4. Binding agents and mortars - technology of binding agents and mortars 5. Concrete - production, transport and processing 6. Light concrete and products with fibres - light concrete production, application 7. Ceramics - application of ceramic products 8. Metals - the most common application 9. Glass and polymers 10. Wood and bitumen 11. Insulating materials and construction made of ceramic materials 12. Wooden constructions - decline - renaissance 13. Steel construction 14. Iron- concrete construction

Learning outcomes
The structure of building solids. The properties of building materials. Chemical resistance and durability of building materials. Corrosion, protection against corrosion. Stone and aggregates, properties,application. Wood, kinds and properties,protection.Wood supporting structures and unsupporting structures. Metals, iron, steel, non - ferrous metals and their alloys. Steel kinds and properties,steel marking. Steel building constructions.Glass, kinds and properties. Glass building constructions. Ceramics. Binders, kinds. Mortar, types and production, properties and application. Concrete, ingredients, sorts, fundamental properties and application. Azbestos - cement products. Plastic, laminate, polymer concrete, properties and application in building industry.
Orientation in basic construction materials and the practical use thereof. Understanding the chararacteristics of straining and proportioning thereof.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of mechanics.

Student performance assessment

Student shows basic knowledge of construction materials and construction principles.
