Course content
1. Structure of genes and genomes 2. Characterization of the genome of model plants from the point of view of genetic engineering 3. Gene cloning 4. Direct transformation 5. Indirect transformation 6. Economically important transgenes 7. Marker and selectable genes 8. Problems related to GMOs, ethical and legal issues of GMO 9. Detection of GMOs, risks in GMO cultivation 10. DNA vaccines

Learning outcomes
Plant genetic engineering presents the possibilities of using recombinant DNA techniques in plants. The course is focused on methods of gene identification and cloning, plant transformation and selection of transgenic plants. It also includes the topic of ethical and legal issues of GMOs, the issue of GMO detection and possible risks associated with the cultivation of GMO plants.
Students are familiar with the issues of genetic engineering and GMOs in connection with agricultural use.
Knowledge of the basics of genetics, molecular biology and basic molecular biological methods is assumed.
