Course content
1. History of biotechnology as a field, development of biotechnology, microbial and molecular biotechnology 2. Organisms used in microbial biotechnologies: viruses, bacteria 3. Organisms used in microbial biotechnologies: yeasts, fungi, cell cultures 4. Shale technologies, biomass production, biologically active substances 5. Fermentation: Types of fermentation, participating organisms and enzymes. Traditional biotechnology. Modern procedures: Production of fuels, pharmaceuticals, 6. Gene engineering, use of microorganisms for horizontal transfer of genetic information: Recombinant DNA techniques, gene isolation, transformation techniques, gene expression in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells 7. Production of recombinant proteins, isolation and purification of products, scale-up and transfer to semi-operational conditions 8. Industrial biotechnology: production of therapeutic proteins and nucleic acids, recombinant vaccines, use of recombinant microorganisms for the production of commercially important enzymes, small biological molecules, antibiotics and biopolymers. 9. Agricultural applications: microbial insecticides, biofuel production and biomass utilization, SCP production 10. Bioremediation, environmental biotechnology.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with current research trends in biotechnology, modern biotechnological processes and applications of cell cultures, cultures of autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms in the chemical and food industry, pharmacy and agriculture.
Students are able to orientate in the field of biotechnology and their applications in the chemical and food industry, pharmacy and agriculture

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Active participation in exercises, protocols from laboratory exercises, understanding the curriculum defined for the exam.
