Course content
Contents of blocks and seminars: 1. Plant biotechnology: Importance, perspectives, directions of biotechnology development. 2. History of plant explant cultures: Aseptic cultures of plants, embryos, organs, tissues, cells, protoplasts. Principles of aseptic handling of plant material. 3. Nutrition of explant cultures. Hormonal demands of cultures. Physical conditions of cultivation. 4. Regulation of morphogenesis. Basic regeneration processes. 5. Genetically stable and variable cultures. Somaclonal variability. 6. Micropropagation, in vitro healing, embryoculture, callus and suspension cultures, induction of haploid formation. 7. Possibilities and perspectives of using biotechnologies in plant breeding. 8. Plant gene and genome structure. 9. Enzymes used in molecular biology. 10. Principles and possibilities of controlled gene manipulations in plants. 11. Transgenes important for breeding. 12. Ethical and legal issues of genetic engineering. 13. GMP cultivation, molecular pharming, plants as bioreactors. 14. Excursion to the workplace of explant cultures - VÚRV Prague Ruzyně

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide an overview of plant biotechnology - the theoretical background of plant biotechnology, cultures of plant in vitro, practical applications in plant breeding, genetics and the production of genetically modified plants.
Students are able to orientate in the field of plant biotechnology

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam

Active participation in exercises, protocols from laboratory exercises, understanding the curriculum defined for the exam.
