Course content
Contents of blocks and seminars: 1. Qualitative and quantitative characteristics of livestock. 2. Genetic markers - use for genome mapping. 3. QTL detection, Candidate genes, Functional cloning; positional cloning, positional markers; positional candidate approach. 4. Genetic mapping, Genetic linking maps; cytogenetic mapping and physical mapping. 5. Genome imprinting Causes and theory of parental conflict, Lyonization process. 6. Mutations and their effects on animal characteristics and fitness. 7. Genetic determination of horse and livestock coloration. Genetic nature of a wool formation. 8. Cattle, sheep, goats: Important candidate genes related to meat tenderness, influence on growth and development. Significant candidate genes related to fat quality and meat marbling; Important candidate genes related to milk yield. 9. Cattle, sheep, goats: Important candidate genes related to reproduction and mammary gland health. 10. Selected hereditary disorders of cattle health, selected hereditary disorders of goat and sheep health. 11. Pigs: An overview of candidate genes for meat production traits and reproduction traits. 12. Selected hereditary disorders of pig health. 13. Significant candidate genes for desired traits and selected inherited horse health disorders.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing)

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to expand the basic knowledge acquired in previous courses of genetic disciplines focus on the genetics of individual species of livestock in relation to the required basic characteristics and fitness.
The student will gain an overview of the level of genetic conditionality of selected useful properties of livestock, including health consequences. He can apply this knowledge in practice, for example, to optimize livestock breeding procedures.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of morphology and physiology of farm animals, including the basics of genetics (GEN I, GEN II)

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam

Prerequisite for routine work with information technologies and database systems, for solving tasks related to the study of heredity of the main production traits in basic species of livestock.
