Course content
Introduction, importance of plant breeding, historical background of plant breeding, organisation of breeding in Czech Republic. Biological bases of plant breeding, origin of cultivated plants, gene centres. Characterisation of cultivated varieties, changes in assortment. Gene resources, gene banks. Breeding targets - yield and yield stability, quality of production, length of vegetation period, resistance to stress factors, ability to technology of cultivation. Breeding for resistance to diseases and pests. Breeding methods - selection as basal method of plant breeding. Crossing (combination), principles of selection of parental components. Intergeneric and interspecific crossing, utilisation of this method in plant breeding, results. Project of backcross breeding. Selection of breeding material after crossing. Heterosis breeding, selection of parental components - combinational ability testing, heterosis in F1 hybrids. Heterosis in synthetic populations. Mutation breeding, polyploid and haploid breeding. Induction of mutations, detection of mutant plants. In vitro methods of plant cell, tissue and organ cultures in plant breeding. Micropropagation in vitro, androgenesis, somaclonal variation, genetic engineering. System of variety testing in Czech Republic, legislature. Maintenance breeding of cultivated varieties. Techniques of plant breeding - documentation, facilities, breeding station, nursery, field tests.

Learning outcomes
Introduction to theoretical bases of plant breeding, breeding methods and methods of evaluation of breeding material. Methodology and techniques of breeding new varieties, principles of maintenance breeding.
Students are able to orientate in the field of plant breeding

Standard knowledge of biology and genetics

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Active participation in exercises, protocols from laboratory exercises, understanding the curriculum defined for the exam.
