Course content
1. Breeding and seed production, maintenance of varieties (maintenance breeding), propagation (seed production). Variety types, genetic structure of varieties and specific requirements for variety maintenance. 2. Causes of variety degradation and systems of maintenance breeding in self-pollinating, cross-pollinating and vegetatively propagated crops. Application of biotechnological procedures in maintenance breeding, in vitro systems of vegetatively propagated plants and production of virus-free plants, in vitro gene banks and preservation of elite genotypes. 3. Biological and seed value of seeds and seedlings. Seed modifications. General and specific standard of vegetation factors, seed agrotechnics and specifics of individual groups of crops. 4. Use of protein markers to identify varietal purity and variety authenticity. Use of molecular markers. Specifics of propagation of hybrid varieties, biochemical and molecular markers for hybridity evaluation. Specifics of propagation of transgenic varieties, monitoring of transgenes.
