Course content
1. Musical Classicism - origin and early evolution (cultural-historical connection, typical sings of style, symphony and string quartet - J. Haydn) 2. High Classicism, W. A. Mozart (Gluck´s opera reform, works of W. A. Mozart) 3. Style completing in work of L. van Beethoven (Beethoven´s symphonic works, piano sonatas, disruption of style norms and transition to Early Romanticism) 4. Czech composers of Classicism (musical life in Czech country, Czech musicians abroad) 5. Musical forms of Early Romanticism - romantic song and piano work (esthetical and social task of song, characteristic piece, dancing idealization, F. Schubert, R. Schumann, F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, F. Chopin, F. Liszt) 6. Romantic symphony and symphonic poem (programme symphony, symphonic poem, F. Schubert, F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, H. Berlioz, F. Liszt, classical-romantic synthesis of J. Brahms) 7. Romantic opera (German romantic opera, Wagner´s opera reform, G. Verdi) 8. Czech music of 19th century (specifics of Czech music evolution , B. Smetana) 9. Czech music of 19th century - continuation (A. Dvořák, Z. Fibich) 10. Russian music of 19th century (P.I. Čajkovskij, Mohutná hrstka) 11. Antecedents and founders of music of 20th century (Late Romanticism - G.Mahler and R.Strauss, Impressionism - C.Debussy, M.Ravel) 12. The most significant personalities and movements of world music in first half of 20th century (I. Stravinskij, II. Viennese school, Parisian six, Neo-folklorism, Soviet and American music) 13. Founders of Czech music of 20th century (L. Janáček, V. Novák, J. Suk, B. Martinů) 14. Main compositional movements of second half of 20th century (serialism, aleatorics, electronic music, minimalism, the most important personalities of Czech music in 2nd half of 20th century)

Learning outcomes
The course is divided into three terms. Two terms provide an introduction to the field of classical music from the Euro-American cultural area from its beginnings until the 20th century. The third term is oriented towards the development of pop music linked with aspects of wide historical, cultural and social influences.
Ability to recognize basic historical types of western art music of the 18th-20th centuries.

Written examination, Questionnaire

Literature+stud.literature on e AMOS.Students obtain credit on the basis of audio test and by this way they demonstrate ability of style and functional categorization of music selection.
