Course content
1. Terminological introduction, outline of evolution of non-artificial music on turn of 19th and 20th century (problem of idea " pop music" and possible terminological alternatives, music in non-esthetical connection, origin of modern pop music in context of citizen society). 2. Afro-American folklore as foundation of jazz music sphere (historical connection, bearing musical principles of Afro-American folklore, work song, holler, spiritual, blues). 3. Jazz origin and its early evolution stages (ragtime, New Orleans, connection with mass media, hot dance music of 20th and new jazz centres). 4. Swing as globally pop jazz style, bebop (origin and diffusion of swing music, connection with media change, critical position towards commercial swing, bebop start, prominent representatives). 5. Post-war evolution of jazz music (cool jazz, hard bop, syncretic movements and experiments of 60th - free jazz, jazz rock, laps into sphere of artificial music, bossa nova, outline of evolution into present). 6. Beginning of rock, early evolution (cultural-historical connection, rhythm & blues, connection with country & western, rock'n'roll in 50th, prominent representatives, media evolution) 7. Rock in 50th and 60th (diffusion of rock music, syncresis with different style, soul, surf groups, American stage, British moving at the beginning of 60th, performers and style changes in 60th) 8. Rock in 70th and 80th (changes of technologies and culturally historical connection, prominent representatives, of 70th and 80th, glam rock, punk, start of "new movements", confrontation with dance music) 9. Outline of current trends of pop music 10. Modern pop music in inter-war Czechoslovakia (culturally historical connection and possibilities, significant personalities and trends of period between war - operatta and parlour repertoire, tramp song, Karel Hašler) 11. Czech jazz and swing until 1948 (suppositions and evolution of jazz music in Czech background, significant representatives, start of swing, problems in period of Protectorate) 12. Czech jazz after 1948 (opinions on pop music after February 1948, problems of jazz stage, revival at the end of 50th, evolution into present) 13. Czech rock until 1968 (beginning of rock music in our area, conflicts with communist regime, revival of Czech rock stage in 60th) 14. Czech rock and pop music in 70th and 80th (twist after 1968, Czech rock and folk in context of official cultural policy, underground movement)

Learning outcomes
The course introduces students to the development of pop music focused on the 20th century. It helps with orientation in various styles of modern pop music (folk, country, rock, metal, etc.) and jazz involving social and historical contexts.
Student gains knowledge in history of jazz and popular music
