Course content
Course has seminar form. Compositions are assigned for individual analysis to students. Music compositional principles of 20th century can be demonstrated. Analysis results are discussed within seminars. The selection of compositions can vary depending on number of students in group or possibly actual requirements and student´s needs. Following plan presents rather general concept about discussed themes: 1. Liberalization of tonality principles within period of High and Late Romanticism (R. Wagner - Předehra k opeře Tristan a Isolda) 2. Polytonality (Charles Ives - Concord sonáta, část "The Alcotts") 3. Principles of triviality, anti-aesthetics (I. Stravinskij - Příběh vojáka - části "Pochod vojáka", "Královský pochod") 4. Neo-Folklorism (B. Bartók - Hudba pro strunné nástroje, bicí a celestu - 4. věta) 5. Leoš Janáček in cotext of European avant-garde (L. Janáček - Symfonietta - 2. věta) 6. Neo-Classicism (I. Stravinskij - Předehra k baletu Pulcinella) 7. Jazz influences (G. Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue) 8. Dodecaphony (A. Schönberg - Pět klavírních kusů op. 25, Preludium) 9. Post-Weber Serialism (W. Lutoslawski - Smuteční hudba - 1. věta) 10. Individual synthesis, original compositional approach (O. Messiaen - Messe de la Pentecôte - část "Les choses visibles et invisibles") 11. Timbre as bearing musical principle (B. Bartók - Hudba pro strunné nástroje, bicí a celestu - 3. věta) 12. Timbre music (K. Penderecki - Lukášovy pašije, část "Popule meus") 13. Minimalism (S. Reich - Clapping music) 14. Use of chance principle (P. Eben - Okna, část "Zlaté okno")

Learning outcomes
The aims of the course are to give students an insight into the nature of creative composition with emphasis on techniques employed in the 20th century (e.g. serial music, principles of aleatory, electronic, concrete and minimal music) involving new syntheses from the second half of the 20th century. The course also explores the relationships between the methods of classical and contemporary music.

Student obtains credit on the basis of independently done analysis of given composition.
