Course content
History of microbiology. Overview of groups of microorganisms. Structure and function of viruses. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell and its morphology. Chemical composition of microorganisms, their metabolism and their participation in element cycles in nature, soil microbiology. Influence of environmental condition on microorganisms. Nutrition of microorganisms, growth and reproduction. Use of microorganisms in refuse decomposition, water treatment, mulching, in processing of animal fodder and in production of food. Animal microbiome, pathogens, chemoterapeutics and antibiotics, basics of immunology. Important microorganisms in industry.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to meet students with the historical aspects of microbiology, with particular groups of microorganisms, their morphology and physiology, and with environmental factors that influence the growth and multiplication of microorganisms, and last but not least with the importance and use of microorganisms.
Students will acquire general knowledge of microbiology - historicals aspects, overview of microorganisms, structure and physiology of bacteria, relationships between microorganisms, pathogenesis, treatment of infections etc.

fundamental knowledge of biology, genetics, chemistry

Assessment methods and criteria
Test

Requirements for obtaining credit: 100% attendance at seminars, results from continuous tests, seminar presentations, protocols from exercises.
