Course content
1. Mathematics, mathematics didactics, constructivism 2. Number sense 3. Introduction of numbers. Number ranges in primary grades. Different modes of representation. 4. Big numbers. Introduction, representation of number relationships. Equality, inequality. 5. Whole numbers. Integers. Rational numbers. Rounding. 6. Expression of a quantity in position system. Decimal position system. 7. Test. 8. Addition and subtraction (understanding, modes of representation, contexts, ways of counting) 9. Multiplication and division (understanding, modes of representation, contexts, ways of counting) 10. Properties of arithmetic operations with whole numbers (introduction on primary school level, modes of representation, "proofs", use in mental arithmetic). Pre-algebraic thinking 11. Written additions and subtraction. Historical algorithms. 12. Written multiplication and division. Estimations. Calculators. 13. Handling data. Tables and graphs. 14. Computer aided mathematics on primary school level

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book), Activating (simulations, games, drama)
  • Class attendance - 42 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The subject is intended for the pre-service primary school teachers (pupils aged 6 - 11) and is composed se introduction into the didactics of mathematics as a scientific discipline. Topics: number sense, place value, basic arithmetic operations (different interpretations and representations), mental arithmetic, written algorithms, protoalgebraic and functional thinking, handling data.
Student acquires (a) knowledge about mathematical concepts developed on primary school level (whole numbers and arithmetic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), their mathematical background, order in learning and relationships; (b) competence in elaboration of mathematical concepts for the school education, (c) competence in diagnosis and evaluation of pupil's performance.

Active participation in seminars, seminar work and its presentation.
