Learning outcomes
The course is focused on genetic principles of histological, anatomical and embryological features of the Metazoa, as well as on metazoan variants of selected general genetic topics. An important part of the course is an overview of the sequenced genomes of phylogenetically important animal species. The basic structure of the course consists of three main topics: (A) Key evolutionary novelties of Metazoa and subordinate taxa such as Cnidaria, Bilateria, Chordata, Vertebrata, and Artropoda (cell differentiation, tissues, extracellular matrix, origins of multicellularity, segmentation, nervous system, sense organs, neural crest, immunity, etc.) and their genetic bases; (B) genome comparison of closely related (human-chimpanzee, domestic animals, Drosophilidae, Tetraodontidae) or distant (inter-phyletic) species, respectively; (C) genetic principles of important evolutionary processes (speciation, epigenetics, sex determination).
The student will acquire an understanding of evolutionary processes, their underlying genetic basis, and factors affecting them
Enrolling students should have a pre-existing grounding in genetics (as taught in KMB/240)

Oral examination

Student has to score at least 70% in the final examination to pass
