The content of practicals: 1) The making of mitotic chromosome preparations from onion roots. 2) The making of meiotic chromosome preparations from testes of Locusta migratoria 3) The crossing of Sordaria fimicola for tetrad analysis. 4) Hybridization of various strains of Drosophila melanogaster for a demonstration of autosomal and sex-linked traits inheritance. 5) Evaluation of a paternity test. Solving of theoretical problems: dominance, mono-, dihybridism, gene interactions, genetic linkage, sex-linked traits inheritance, and population genetics.

  • Preparation for credit - 30 hours per semester
  • Class attendance - 26 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
Genetics as a science dealing with the heredity and variability of organisms has become an indispensable component of almost all research in biology and medicine. This prominent position has been achieved through the powerful merger of classical and molecular approaches. The goal of the course is to apply knowledge of genetic priciples from the lectures for solution of practical as well as theoretical problems.
Students will expand their knowledge of genetics and will be able to use it as a solution to model problems.
Prerequisites
basic understanding of genetics

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination

To pass, at least 70% of points from the final examination text is required along with the presence at the practicals (3 absences max.).
