Course content
|
Content of lectures 1. Structure of the nucleic acids and proteins, structure of the genome, central dogma of molecular biology. 2. Replication of DNA in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. 3. Transcription in prokaryotes and eukaryotes 4. Regulation of transcription in prokaryotes 5. Regulation of transcription in eukaryotes 6. Splicing, transport, stability and editing of RNA, non-coding RNA 7. Proteins synthesis, genetic code, prions. 8. Structure of proteins, posttranslational modification. 9. Viruses, transposones. 10. Mutations, repair of DNA. 11. Basic methods of molecular biology. 12. Genomics. The powerpoint presentations from the course will be available online, the textbooks Molecular Biology from Clark and Pazdernik are available in the academic library.

Learning outcomes
|
The goal of this course is to make students familiar with the principles of the genetic code and with the basic mechanisms of storing, expression and modification of genetic information
Student will understand the basic principles of molecular biology, in particular the molecular processes behind DNA replication, transcription, protein translation and reparation of DNA. Emphasis will be given to the understanding of regulatory mechanisms behind these processes both in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Part of each lecture will be devoted to the principles of basic methods of molecular biology, like PCR, sequencing, gel electrophoresis, restriction analysis, RNA interference, Crispr/Cas9 and others.

Prerequisites

Participants of the course are expected to have a secondary school knowledge of chemistry and cell biology.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Essay, Test
As a requirement for 'zapocet' the participants of the course are asked to take part of a miniconference regarding Nobel prize winners from the field of molecular biology. Student will make their own presentations to explain the key experiments that lead to the discoveries. It is strongly recommended to attend the lectures although it is not a compulsory requirement for the admission to the final test.
