Course content
Content of lectures: 1. Human embryogenesis (gametogenesis, fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation) 2. Human organogenesis 1 (skeletal, muscular and integumentary system) 3. Human organogenesis 2 (circulatory system) 4. Human organogenesis 3 (nervous system and sensory organs) 5. Human organogenesis 4 (digestive, urinary and reproductive system) 6. Birds embryogenesis and organogenesis 7. Fish embryogenesis and organogenesis 8. Insect oogenesis, embryogenesis and organogenesis 9. Indirect development of invertebrates and amphibians (primary and secondary larvae, hormonal control of development) 10. Controlled developmental arrest, diapause 11. Genesis of immune system: innate and adaptive immune system 12. Mechanisms of gender differenciation and development of the gonads 13. Controle of development, malfunctions in cell proliferation and carcinogenesis Content of practicals: 1. Human embryogenesis - observation of human embryos and fetuses, drawing of histological sections 2. Human embryogenesis - observation of developmental defects - excursion to the collections of National Museum and Faculty of Science, Charles University, Praha 3. Prenatal diagnostic (MUDr. David Čutka) - video recordings of developmental defects, introduction of new technique for detection of fetus developmental defects from the blood of mother 4. Mammalian embryogenesis (doc. Dr. Alexander William Bruce, Ph.D.) - dissection of mouse and observation of cleavage 5. Birds embryogenesis - dissection of chicken embryos in different developmental stages 6. Embryogenesis of viviparous fish - dissection of viviparous fish and observation of different stages of embryonic development 7. Insect oogenesis and embryogenesis - dissection and classification of ovaries in several insect species, determination of developmental stage of Drosophila embryos 8. Direct and indirect development of insects - dissection of imaginal discs, salivary glands and brain from Drosophila larvae, staining of polythene chromosomes 9. Insect diapause - demonstration of larval diapause in the fruit fly and imaginal diapause in the linden bugs 10. Final test

Learning outcomes
The practically directed course for bachelor and master students is aimed to learn grounding in descriptive embryology and to understand basic developmental mechanisms in animals and human.
The students will gain an overview about embryogenesis in different groups of animals and they will learn the basic techniques of developmental biology (especially the dissections and microscopical observations). Excursions show the implementation of gained knowledge in the medical and biological practice.

Oral examination, Student performance assessment, Test, Development of laboratory protocols

Requirements for credit: 1) presence on the practical trainings (maximum one absence) 2) submission of protocols from each practical training 3) successful passing of final test Requirements for oral exam: 1) obtaining of the credit
