Course content
1. The Indo-European family of languages and its branches. Germanic languages. 2. The First Germanic Sound Shift (Grimm's Law). Germanic. 3. Germanic tribes on the territory of the present German-speaking countries. The Second Germanic Sound Shift. 4. Old High German - vocabulary. 5. Old High German - the main traits of the grammar. 6. Middle High German - the main development in the systém of sounds 7. Middle High German - vocabulary 8. Middle High German as the language of the literature. 9. Early New High German - the main development in the system of sounds and grammar. 10. Early New High German - vocabulary. 11. Early New High German on the territory of Bohemia. 12. Problemes of the development of the standard German language. 13. New High German in the 18th-19 th centuries. 14. New High German in the 20th century.

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming)
Learning outcomes
The discipline History of the German language should make familiar with the main periods of the development of the grammar and vocabulary of German and give an insight in the regularities of the Grammar of the contemporary German.
Understanding of causes of so called irregularities and exceptions in the Grammar of the contemporary German as well as of the influence of the older German on a part of Czech vocabulary.
Prerequisites
A good knowledge of the Grammar of the contemporary German.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

All examinations and consultations are held in German. Active participation in the courses, preparation of oral presentation + written version.
