Course content
1. Syntax and its relationship to the other linguistic fields; basic sources for studying German syntax 2. Dependency and valency syntax 3. Generative syntax 4. Sentence structures (traditional and modern concepts); constituents of a clause 5. Simple sentence; word order 6. German sentences from the communicative point of view (declarative, imperative and interrogative sentence) 7. Compound sentence; word order; coordinating conjunctions (expression of reason, non-contrast, contrast, alternative, consequence) 8. Complex sentence; word order; classification (conjunctions and types of dependent clauses) 9. Complex sentence; word order; classification (conjunctions and types of dependent clauses) 10. Complex sentence; word order; classification (conjunctions and types of dependent clauses) 11. Negation 12. Verbal structures of a sentence and "Ausrahmung", irregularities 13. Infinitive with zu 14. Learning outcomes
The students will be introduced to the rudiments of German syntax (theoretically and practically). Emphasis will be put on contrasts between Czech and German language, which are difficult for Czech speakers.
Students will acquire basic survey of chosen syntactic theories, focus on valence theory. They will be able to use basic syntactic structures (simple sentence) and will be able to understand the syntax fo common texts.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of German morphology.
