Course content

Seminars: 1. First class - Introduction to the course - Requirements for attaining credit - achieve at least 60% on FCE speaking test done during week 14 and mandatory attendance - Overview of the FCE speaking components 2. Talents and Skills - Warm up discussion about talents; Are we born with them? Or learnt? - Class work; using can, be able to, know how to to talk about skills, abilities and personal qualities 3. The Future of Work - Warm up discussion about the future of work - Vocabulary development 4. Money and Culture - Warm up discussion about Cultural Diversity - Agreeing, disagreeing, Giving opinions with reasons 5. Free Time - Class discussion about free time and travelling - Pair work activity - Popular leisure activities - have/get something done grammar with conversation 6. Model Verbs - Models of deduction, speculation and possibility. Must, can't, might be - Murder mystery - using deductive reasoning listening activity 7. Linking Ideas - Review articles; a, an, the, etc - Follow up pair work activity making deductions and speculations - Linking words; contrast and purpose review 8. Conditionals - 0 Conditional and the...the...comparatives - 1st Conditional and Future time clauses review 9. Unreal, Hypothetical Situations - Unreal conditionals; 2nd and 3rd Conditionals review - More past models; should have, could have, etc. 10. Consolidation week- Putting It All Together - The main aim is for students to understand how all past models and conditional sentences may be used during the same conversation often in the area of problem solving. 11. Indirect and Reported Speech - Review of indirect speech; said, told, asked for reporting comments, commands and question - Reported speech; offer, promise, persuade, warn, suggest, recommend, etc. Their sentence structure. 12. We go through all parts of the FCE speaking exam in preparation for the exam the following week 13. Speaking test in pairs

Learning outcomes
|
The main aim of this course is to help students actively engage in English conversations with confidence and fluency. This is a conversational course where each lesson consists of target grammar (briefly reviewed in class) and vocabulary (as homework) to help students learn to be able to take active part in classroom, group and pair-work discussions. Students take one speaking test at the end of the semester.
Students are able to take an exam at the level B2.

Knowledge of English based on the B1 level in minimum.
