Course content
Content of lectures: 1. Parazitism as a life strategy. An origin and types of parasitism. An origin of complex life cycles and their significance. 2. Parasitic groups – overview of parasitic lineages, their origin, evolution and main characteristics. 3. Population dynamics of parasites and their hosts. Models of evolution of parasite virulence.Genetic variability of parasites and their hosts; resistance and susceptibility. 4. Parasites vs. host homeostatic mechanisms. Immunity, parasite evasion of host immune systems, the mechanisms of patogenesis. 5. Host-Parasite Coevolution. Host specificity, historical relationships, zoogeografy. 6. Aggregation, Distribution, Communities. Interactions among parasitic species. 7. Parasitoids, Hyperparazitism, Social parazitism. 8. Behaviour of parasites, host manipulation, altruism and symbiosis. 9. Significance of parasitism in the evolution of life. Parasitic DNA, Red Queen – origin and evolution of sex, sexual selection. 10. A role of blood-sucking arthropods in epidemiology of parasitic disease. 11. Current and historical epidemies from the biological point of view. Content of practices:
