  • Class attendance - 30 hours per semester
  • Preparation for classes - 10 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The objective of the seminar is to provide students with sufficient space for training in giving short lectures concerning either their own results or more general science topics. The experience of students gained in these seminars will be useful in lecturing in symposia and conferences. In parallel, students will have the opportunity to hear lectures and news given by experienced speakers.
Ability of the students to give a talk about their work/thesis in front of the scientific audience, ability to bear the rational criticism from the scientific audience (mainly from employees and students of the department), ability to discuss the topic, methods and results of their qualification work. Knowledge on news in the field via presentations of external speakers, and of employees and students of the department.
Prerequisites
Students of any specialization of the Bachelor and/or Master degree program who are interested in parasitology and in the news in parasitology are welcomed to enroll in the seminar (and to obtain credits). It is, therefore, intended not only for students of the Department of Parasitology. It is possible (and even suitable and desirable) to enroll in the seminar repeatedly in the course of the studies. The course requires basic knowledge on parasitology, zoology, and general taxonomy of organisms ("Tree of Life"). The course does not have mandatory prerequisites. It is recommended to pass the following courses: Biology of Parasitism (KPA/170), Biology of Parasitic Protists (KPA/480), Biology of Helminths (KPA/484), Biology of Parasitic Arthropods (KPA/486).

Assessment methods and criteria
Analysis of student's language skills, Analysis of the qualification work

Participants of the course are informed in advance about the schedule of the seminars and of the speakers; this information is also available on the websites of the department. Successful passing of the course requires: 1. The attendance of all seminars in the particular semester. 2. Students of the Bachelor programme are obliged to give a talk about their topic 2x during the 3-year-course of their study (in the Czech language), and students of the Master programme annually (in the Czech language with slides in English). At the seminar the students present the topic of their theses. In the course of the first year of the study, it is assumed that the students do not have enough results yet, thus it is expected that they will present the so far known information about the topic (introduction), and the methodology and objectives of their work. Students should contact and ask Dr. Jana Kvičerová for the date of the presentation. Students who plan to defend their theses in the given semester should present well in advance before submitting the final thesis in order to be able to incorporate critical comments. The obligation to report at the Seminar of the Department is based on the Dean's Measure No. D48. The course is not finished by an exam, but only by a credit. The course KPA/181 (guarantor J. Kvičerová) runs together with the course KPA/805 (Seminar for PhD students; guarantor E. Nováková).
