Content of lectures: 1. Mechanisms of Infection, Infection Dynamics, and Properties of Infectious Agents (conditions for the development of infection, factors influencing the occurrence of infection, and specific characteristics of infectious agents, including virulence, pathogenicity, toxicity, and antimicrobial resistance). 2. Transmission and Spread of Infectious Diseases, Population Susceptibility, Prevalence, and Incidence (basic principles of the epidemic process, sources of infection, modes of transmission, and routes of disease spread). 3. Natural Foci of Infectious Diseases, Reservoirs, Vectors, and Epidemiological Models (development and characteristics of disease foci and the fundamentals of epidemiological modeling). 4. Zoonotic Diseases (viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa). 5. Imported Parasitic Diseases, Healthcare-Associated (Nosocomial) Infections, and Case Studies (what infectious diseases can be acquired during travel to exotic destinations as well as in everyday hospital settings). 6. Current and Clinically Challenging Infectious Agents in the Czech Republic (Leptospira, Listeria, Borrelia, Ehrlichia, Bartonella, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, and cytomegalovirus) (key facts, current developments, and clinically relevant aspects of infections that are relatively common in the Czech population, often difficult to diagnose, and capable of causing significant health problems).

Epidemiology focuses on current infectious diseases in our setting, their diagnosis and treatment, as well as noteworthy topics and interesting clinical cases from practice. The course also covers the fundamentals of demography, assessment of population health, the health status of the Czech population, the major risk factors affecting the health of the Czech population, and the epidemiology of infectious and non-communicable diseases.
