Course content
1. The problematic of socialization and the functions of schooling 2. Social and linguistic determination of educational achievements, cultural and social capital, social inequality. 3. Formal and informal order, teacher expectations, labelling and self-fulfilling prophecy 4. Hidden curriculum 5. Children and youth at risk 6. Truancy 7. Aggression and violence 8. Media influence 9. Vandalism and drug dependence 10. Children in crisis and self-destructive situations

Learning outcomes
This seminar will deal with basic issues in sociology of education and school socialization, including selected problems associated with deviant and antisocial behaviour of children and youth. Students will gain understanding of specific aspects of schooling that might negatively influence and affect pupils' self-perception and behaviour, even though teachers themselves might remain oblivious to such impact on pupils. The course will deal with the problematic of social and cultural reproduction, hidden curriculum, labelling, self-fulfilling prophecy, growing aggression within the school population, bullying, and other types of socially pathological behaviour..
Students should understand broader issues and contexts of schooling with a focus on students' social and cultural environment.
