Course content
1.- 2. Concept of bilingualism, circumstances of gaining bilingualism, the difference between natural acquisition and language acquistion during school attendance. Limits of age. 3.-4.Means of language and language skills. Language, communicative and intercultural competence. A Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Levels of acquisition of language and requirements for particular language skills. 5.-6.Means of language and language skills, their acquisition and their sequence by bilingual persons. Comparison with the language gained in a common way (during school attendance) 7.-8. Language and culture, intercultural competence,motivation, effort for integration, reasons of bilingual upbringing. English as the most important language - view of development of Czech- English bilingualism 9.-10.Rules for bilingual upbringing (family, environment, Grammont ´s s rule). Development of a questionnaire for interview with bilingual persons. 11.-13. Case stuides (students): presentation one´s own results of interviewing bilingual persons, comparison with the theoretical knowledge, presentation of one´s own conclusions 14. Summary and discussion to the topic

Learning outcomes
The seminar aims to describe to the students the issue of bilingualism (definition of bilingualism, types of bilingualism, difference between natural acquistion of bilingualism and acqusition of foreign language during school attendance). The basic language skills (listening comprehension,speaking, reading,writing) and their acquisition by bilingual personswill be discussed. Comparison will be made with the language learned in a natural way. Some factors which can have an influence on the development of bilingualism- like culture, motivation, basic educational methods which should be follwed by bilingual education will also be discussed. Illustration of case studies of bilingual persons will be presented.The development of questionnaire as a foundation for one´s own case studies will be presented at end of the seminar as well as presentation of one´s own conclusions.
After completing the seminar the students are expected to be familiar with the basic knowledge about the issue of bilinguasm, practical application of rules for the bilingual upbringing, integration of bilingual pupil or pupil with different mother tongue to school lessons.
Prerequisites
The subject is designated primarily for the students of humanistic subjects (foreign languages, Czech language, psychology, pedagogy) but it is also suitable for all students of teaching profession who meet in their practice with bilingual pupil or pupil with a different mother tongue
