Course content
Introduction into pre-school pedagogy. Pre-school pedagogy as a social and educational policy issue. The concept of the child and childhood in J.A. Comenius´ works. F. Froebel´s educational emphases; froebelism. The development of public pre-school institutions in Bohemia The transformations of pre-primary education after 1989. Kindergarten - a place of pre-school education Contemporary changes in the family and the consequences for the pre-school child. The contemporary concept of pre-school education. The personality of the pre-school educationalist. Basic activitites of the pre-school child. The contemporary system of pre-school institutions in the Czech Republic. Alternative educational programmes. Czech pre-school education in the international context and perspective.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book), Written action (comprehensive tests, clauses), Activating (simulations, games, drama)
Learning outcomes
The course will help students understand the developmental tendencies in pre-school education as related to social needs and their transformations, within the intellectual grasp of institutional pre-schol education and the contemporary pre-school education at home and abroad. Special emphasis will be placed on national tradition, J.A. Comenius in particular.
Understanding key concepts and contexts: the concept of pre-school pedagogy - pre-school pedagogy within the system pedagogical disciplines - the relation between pre-school pedagogy and general pedagogy. Historical development of pre-school education - the changing targets of pre-school education. The core of educational activities in infancy and at pre-school age; the structure of child´s activities. The environment as an educational factor - family; the structure of pre-primary institutions; international trends.

Written examination, Interview, Seminar work

Active participation; a seminar paper on a theme relating to the course.
