Course content
Lectures: (The order of the lectures and details of the content can be changed) 1 - Basic concepts of sociology, how to think sociologically? 2 - Birth of sociology and modern society. August Comte. Émile Durkheim. Ferdinand Tönnies. 3 - Max Weber and authority. Bureaucracy. Religion and economy. 4 - Chicago school. Urbanization, migration, integration. Inspiration by ecology. 5 - Social conflict and function. Postmodernism in sociology. 6 - Socialization. Life cycle. Structure of the society. Social stratification. Stratification points of views. Status. 7 - Social groups. Sociometry. Norms, values, attitudes. Stability and change. 8 - Changes of family and gender. Gender and labour market. 9 - Education and labour in 20th and 21st century. Postindustrial society. 10 - Mass media, mass culture and consumption society. Lifestyles. 11 - Globalization. Democracy and economic systems. Modernization and conservativism. 12 - Environmental sociology. Risk society. Reisk perception. 13 - Rural sociology. Changes of czech rural areas and rural culture. 14 - Methods of sociological research. Collection, analysis and interpretation of data.

Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to present major topics of sociology, its relation to other social sciences, important phases of the sociological studies. The course particularly focuses on the insight into the birth and development of modern society, with reflections of changes of Czech society. Beyond the traditional sociological concepts, terms and authors, students will be familiarize with theories and case studies of environmental and rural sociology.
Students are aware of the basic sociological concepts, they are able to orientate in the historical terminus of the development of sociology and they are able to apply their sociological understanidng to the everyday reality.
Prerequisites
High school knowledge of social sciences is a prerequisite for the course of Sociology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Test

Credit Requirements: Students will read and discuss short text during the semester (3-6 texts). Written test to verify acquired knowledge. Examination Requirements: Student demonstrates the knowledge of the subject of sociology and understanding of selected sociological problem, including the study of the literature.
