Course content
Course Description: 1. Introduction. Objectives. Development, broadening and main tasks of grasslands. Grassland. The conditions of applying (productive and non productive) functions. 2. History and present state in meadow and pasture sciences in the Czech Republic and in other countries. 3. Principles of meadow-grass and pasture-grass planting biological, ecological and phytosociological demands of meadows and pastures. Abiotical conditions of grassland ecosystems. 4. The biotic conditions of grasslands. Vegetation dynamics of grasslands. Ecological stability circumstances of grasslands. 5. Biological, ecological and agricultural characteristic of meadow species (grasses, legumes and others). Application of bioindication values in grassland science. 6. Synecology of meadows and pastures. Evaluation and verifying of grasslands. 7. Floristic-phytocenological classification of grasslands. Ecological and fodder productive characteristics of grasslands types. 8. Fyziognomic-floristical classification of grasslands. Typology of grasslands, application in agriculture. 9. Ecological and economical basis of grassland management. 10. Theoretical aspects of regulation of water regime. 11. Theoretical principles of improving of soil conditions and of nutrition of grasslands. 12. The improving of growth composition. Management of meadows and pastures (theoretical principles and practical aspects). 13. Influence of grazing to the different animals and their influence to the grasslands ecosystems. Suitable systems of grazing, livestock density (weight) in pasture. Ecological and economical synthesis. Possibilities and utilization of grassland with minimized impact to the environment.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Excursion
  • Preparation for credit - 30 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 60 hours per semester
  • Semestral paper - 35 hours per semester
  • Class attendance - 16 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
This subject is concerned with the connection of theoretical knowledge of biological and ecological science and on the theoretical basis of agricultural science with the purpose of understanding the dynamics and some functions of grasslands and the possibility of their regulation with the utilisation of scientific knowledge and methods. The aims of the module are: to posses skills of synthesis of ecological and economical aspect with respect to productive and non-productive functions of grasslands.
Students will be able to orientate in the typology classification and categorization of grasslands, their establishment by sowing and over sowing, fertilisation, nutrition, quality of biomass, biomass conservation. Students will take theoretical and practical knowledge of suitable system of grazing. Students will obtain theoretical knowledge to development of nonproductive functions of grasslands.
Prerequisites
The course Fodder crop production. Standard knowledge of biology, ecology, pedology and animal nutrition.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Combined exam

Active participation in exercises, participation in excurse, understanding the curriculum defined for the exam.
