Course content
Thematic groups for particular weeks of term: 1. Importance of fruits, chemical composition, biological value of fruit. 2. Origin of fruit species, pomological dividion, botanical characteristics. 3. Stock of fruit trees and shrubs, their main features and use. 4. Root, stem and crown of trees, anatomy and morphology. 5. Growth and development, phenological phases. 6. Ecology of fruit plant, ecological requirements. 7. T ype of organization of orchards, cultivars of fruit trees. 8. Methods of soil preparation, treatment and cultivation in orchards. 9. Harvesting and assortment of fruits, covering, storage. 10. Pomology. 11. Fruit morfology. 12. Principles of cutting of trees and shrubs, special cultivation of different producing tree shapes. 13. Tree nurseries, sexual and vegetative propagation. Integrated protection against diseases and pests. 14. Nutrition in orchards.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing)
  • Preparation for credit - 10 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 20 hours per semester
  • Semestral paper - 20 hours per semester
  • Class attendance - 56 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The main aims are to obtain basic information about importance of fruits in human nutrition, growing of fruit trees and shrubs common in Central Europe, propagation, nutrition, integrated protection of orchards.
Students are able to orientate in the field of horticulture, growing fruit plants.

Standard knowledge of biology

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Active participation in exercises, protocols from laboratory exercises, understanding the curriculum defined for the exam.
