Course content
Content of the lecture blocks: 1. Morphology and taxonomic classification of insect pests, phytopathogenic nematodes and mites. Bionomics and characteristics of individual groups of plant pests. 2. Ecological aspects of plant protection - relationship between host plant and pest, monitoring of pest populations, methods of trapping individual pests. Abiotic and biotic factors affecting pest abundance, their gradation. Inter- and intra-species relationships in plant protection. 3. Application of molecular biology methods in plant protection. Analysis of the pest genome, molecular mechanisms in host-pest relationships, molecular ecology of pest populations, mapping of resistant populations using molecular methods. 4. Present and future perspectives of plant pest control, different types of control - chemical, biotechnological, GMO plants, emergence and development of resistance, invasive pest species.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Individual tutoring
  • Preparation for classes - 46 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 150 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The subject of study is the main groups of agricultural crop pests - insects, phytopathogenic nematodes and mites, their morphology, bionomy and taxonomic classification, methods of trapping and monitoring, modern methods of detection of individual pest groups and their control.
The student will gain knowledge about important pests of agricultural and horticultural crops. The student will know their morphology and biology. The student will have an overview of the possibilities of controlling important crop pests.
Prerequisites
The student should have sufficient knowledge of biology and at least a basic knowledge of plant protection.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Mastering the knowledge base of selected chapters on agricultural and horticultural pests. The course will end with an oral examination.
